James brings her knowledge, insight and unique perspective on change to New Orleans this year as ACTE’s Opening General Session speaker. Attendees will be left with information to ponder and share as James helps set the stage for three days of learning, sharing and networking. Aside from her work as a cultural anthropologist and writer, James is the founder of the Committee for Children, a nonprofit organization that develops curriculum for the protection of children and the development of alternatives to violence. | | Friday, December 9 @7:30 a.m - 9 a.m. | Gates’ Vander Ark to Share Remarks Tom Vander Ark, executive director for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s education initiatives, will open this year’s special Friday General Session by sharing his perspective on education.
At the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Vander Ark is responsible for the development and administration of the foundation’s education grant programs and scholarship programs, which have committed more than $1 billion to help reduce the financial barriers to higher education for talented low-income students. In addition, the foundation heavily supports the creation of strong new schools and transforming large, impersonal ones into smaller learning environments designed to give all students a rigorous, personalized education.
Attendees will hear not only a unique point of view from Vander Ark, who previously was the superintendent of the Federal Way Public Schools in Washington state, but they will also enjoy a tasty continental breakfast.
