Ken RobinsonOpening General Session

Sponsored by CEV Multimedia
Sir Ken Robinson is an internationally recognized leader in the development of creativity, innovation, education and human resources. Sir Ken is the recipient of the prestigious Peabody Award (2008) and the Benjamin Franklin Medal given by the Royal Society of the Arts in London (2008). In 2005, he was named as one of Time/Fortune/CNN’s Principal Voices. In 2003, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to the arts. And, in 2011, he will kick off the 2011 ACTE Annual Convention as keynote at our Opening General Session!

In 1998, Robinson led a national commission on creativity, education and the economy for the U.K. government bringing together leading business people, scientists, artists and educators. His report, All Our Futures: Creativity, Culture and Education (The Robinson Report) was published to huge acclaim. The London Times said, “This report raises some of the most important issues facing business in the 21st century. It should have every CEO and human resources director thumping the table and demanding action.” He was the central figure in developing a strategy for creative and economic development as part of the peace process in Northern Ireland, working with the ministers for training, education enterprise and culture. The resulting blueprint for change, Unlocking Creativity, was adopted by politicians of all parties and by business, education and cultural leaders across the province. He was one of four international advisors to the Singapore government for its strategy to become the creative hub of southeast Asia.

Now based in Los Angeles, he has worked with national governments in Europe and Asia, with international agencies, Fortune 500 companies, not-for-profit corporations and some of the world’s leading cultural organizations. His book, Out of Our Minds: Learning to Be Creative (Wiley-Capstone), is described by Director magazine as “a truly mind-opening analysis of why we don’t get the best out of people at a time of punishing change.”

Ray McNultyFriday General Session

Hosted by the CTE Foundation
Sponsored by Corinthian Colleges
ACTE is pleased to welcome Raymond J. McNulty as speaker at our Friday General Session.

Ray McNulty is president of the International Center for Leadership in Education, having previously served as senior vice president. Prior to joining the International Center, he was a senior fellow at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where he worked with leading educators from around the country on improving our nation's high schools. He also is a past president of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

An educator since 1973, McNulty has been a teacher, vice principal, principal and superintendent. From 2001-03, he served as Vermont's education commissioner. During his tenure, he focused on aligning the Department of Education's work on three key issues—early education, educator quality and secondary school reform.

McNulty has presented at the state, national and international levels on the need for school systems to accept the challenges that lie ahead. He is committed to raising performance standards for both teachers and students and to building solid connections between schools and their communities. McNulty believes strongly that education systems cannot wait for the children and challenges to arrive at school; rather, schools need to reach out and help forge solutions.

He is the author of It’s Not Us Against Them—Creating the Schools We Need, published in 2009 by the International Center.

Eric ChesterClosing General Session

Sponsored by Cengage Learning
Eric Chester, a leading expert on post-Generation Xer's, is a former CTE teacher and coach-turned-motivational speaker for youth who has visited thousands of high schools and colleges. He is the author of the bestselling books Employing Generation Why and Getting Them to Give a Damn. Chester will close the Annual Convention speaking how leaders develop work ethic in the emerging workforce.

A New Look for ACTE’s Networking Reception and Auction

ACTE is changing the format and content of this year’s Networking Reception at the Annual Convention and Career Tech Expo! We are going to continue our traditional live auction, but, instead of bidding on silent auction items, this year’s event will showcase a state baskets contest. Annual Convention attendees will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite basket(s), and the votes provide a chance to win it! Each basket will reflect a state “theme.” For example, the South Carolina basket could include grits and palmetto items to reflect a Palmetto State theme.

State leaders must drop off their baskets at the Convention Headquarters office by end of business on Wed., Nov. 16. ACTE staff will display the baskets in the Exhibit Hall starting Thursday morning, at which point attendees will be able to vote on their favorite basket(s). For $10, attendees will receive five tickets to place in the bags in front of their favorite basket(s), and will include their name, member number and phone number on each ticket. Each ticket provides members a chance to win! Attendees can buy tickets at the CTE Support Fund table on Thurs., Nov. 17.

Attendees can vote in the Exhibit Hall until 4:00 p.m. or at the Networking Reception until 6:30 p.m. ACTE staff and volunteers will draw names for each state basket, and winners can either pick up their basket at the reception or by 4:00 p.m. on Friday in the Headquarters office.

The live auction promises to be as exciting as always, with several items including a Snap-on tool box! More details about the live auction items will be announced this fall. If you have suggestions or ideas for live auction items, please contact Ashley Parker, ACTE Media Relations Manager. All auction sales go to support the CTE Support Fund. If you have any suggestions on items to include in your state basket, please contact your state leader.

Pre-Convention Workshops

Get an early start on the best professional development event of the year by registering for one of these great sessions. Keep an eye out as we add more and more to the pre-Convention agenda!

Embedding the Common Core State Standards Into CTE Courses SOLD OUT
The Common Core State Standards for Reading and English Language Arts provide clear expectations for the academic knowledge and skills that will prepare students to succeed in further learning and the workplace. The challenge for the CTE teacher is to discover where these academic standards fit in the instruction of technical content and how to provide enabling learning activities that enhance and support their students’ technical achievement.

This full-day workshop will help the CTE teacher and administrator understand the expectations for learning presented by the Common Core State Standards and will address specific strategies CTE teachers can use to embed the knowledge and skills from these standards into CTE courses. Emphasis will be placed on improving the quality of career/technical studies to ensure career/technical courses provide students with opportunities for placement in high-wage, high-skill and high-demand careers or to prepare students for high-quality postsecondary study. Examples of writing prompts and reading comprehension strategies will be used to engage the session participants and model strategies that will promote achievement of the Common Core State Standards. A set of mathematics standards from the Common Core State Standards that can be easily embedded in CTE courses will be identified, and strategies for engaging, hands-on mathematics instruction will be presented.

NRCCTE Jump-start Workshops

Literacy-in-CTE Jump-start Workshop
This one-day Jump-start pre-session will introduce administrators, CTE teachers and/or literacy coaches to the core principles of the Literacy-in-CTE curriculum integration model, descriptions of the strategies, strategy selection and the logistics of implementation.

About the Model
Literacy-in-CTE began as an NRCCTE research study that sought to determine whether enhancing the literacy opportunities that occur in the CTE curriculum can have a significant effect on CTE students’ reading scores. The data showed a statistically significant improvement on students’ vocabulary and reading comprehension scores. Based on those findings, the Literacy-in-CTE curriculum integration model was offered as a pilot in 2010-2011 and is being implemented in two sites during 2011-2012.

In this model, CTE teachers work together in 10 days of intensive professional development across an academic year. They examine their curricula to find authentic opportunities for literacy and then select the most appropriate literacy strategies to create lessons. Strategy selections and lesson plans are designed to help students understand their CTE content; however, both students and teachers have reported that many students are able to transfer the use of the strategies to other literacy opportunities.

The Literacy-in-CTE Jump-start Workshop will be held Nov. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and includes breakfast, lunch and breaks. There is no on-site registration, and, while the workshop will feature some concurrent sessions with the Math-in-CTE Jump-start, participants must choose an area of interest when registering. Registration is $285 per participant prior to the Aug. 1 early-bird deadline; after that date, the registration fee increases to $295.

Register today!

Math-in-CTE Jump-start Workshop
The Math-in-CTE Jump-start pre-session will introduce administrators, CTE teachers and/or math teachers to the core principles of the model, the seven-element framework and the logistics of implementation. States or districts are encouraged to bring teams of participants in different roles, including math teachers, to learn the model from differing perspectives.

About the Model
Math-in-CTE is an NRCCTE research-based model of curriculum integration that was designed to enhance the math that naturally occurs in the CTE curriculum. Findings from the original research study showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the standardized math test scores of students who received the math-enhanced lessons in their CTE classrooms and those who were instructed with more traditional methods.

In a full implementation of the Math-in-CTE model, teams of CTE teachers in the same content area work with math teacher partners in 10 days of professional development across an academic year. They map their curriculum to find the intersection of math and CTE and create math-enhanced lessons plans that are designed to be presented where they normally occur in the instructional year.

The Math-in-CTE Jump-start Workshop will be held Nov. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and includes breakfast, lunch and breaks. There is no on-site registration, and, while the workshop will feature some concurrent sessions with the Literacy-in-CTE Jump-start, participants must choose an area of interest when registering. Registration is $285 per participant prior to the Aug. 1 early-bird deadline; after that date, the registration fee increases to $295.

CTEDDI Jump-start Workshop
Imagine a classroom teacher who has a clear picture of the individual instructional needs of his or her students and the class as a whole; a teacher who, in the first few months of school, has mapped an instructional plan that has the potential to improve student competence.

CTEDDI (Career and Technical Education Teachers Using a Data-driven Improvement Model), a program based on three years of research devoted to career and technical professional development, is the only program designed to prepare both administrators and CTE teachers to use technical assessment data to continuously improve their programs. Register in teams and learn some of the basics of CTEDDI using mock data or some of your own!

About the Model
In an NRCCTE-sponsored research study, NOCTI investigated how educators are prepared to use assessment data to improve programs and target individual and group instructional needs in the CTE classroom. Findings from the research on professional development and educator use of assessment data were used to create a professional development program geared toward CTE teachers and administrators.

The CTEDDI Jump-start Workshop will be held Nov. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and includes breakfast, lunch and breaks. While the workshop will feature some concurrent sessions with the Literacy-in-CTE Jump-start, participants must choose an area of interest when registering. Registration is $285 per participant prior to the Aug. 1 early-bird deadline; after that date, the registration fee increases to $295 before the workshop and $325* on site.

Register today!

For more information about the NRCCTE Jump-start Workshops, contact jennifer.sawyer@louisville.edu.

*Checks only will be accepted for CTEDDI on-site registrations. These should be made payable to the University of Louisville.
